Important things to know
It is very important to know where Ekuk is located and how remote it actually is. At this point you already had the interview with our representative where you covered the aspect of how remote Ekuk is but the only way to transfer that feeling of being in Ekuk is to be there for the first time. Understand that once you land in Ekuk you will not find restaurants, shopping centers, cell phone coverage (unless you secure a GCI phone number – more info here), internet… No fire department or hospitals in Ekuk either.
We value reliability
These are the most important rules while being in Ekuk:
We are a zero tolerance facility when it comes to drugs and alcohol. That means that nothing is allowed on the premices of Ekuk Fisheries, during or outside the work hours. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate termination of the contract and you will be returned to Dillingham, AK (our point of hire).
We will not tolerate any kind of harassment within our crew. If you are a kind of person that doesn’t know how to handle your differences with in a civilized manner, you should not come to Ekuk. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate termination of the contract.
Performance is key to success of Ekuk. We work 7 days a week in shifts that could be 16 hours per day during the fishing season. We are all expected to show up on time and perform during that short season, we don’t take days off. If there is a problem with your attendance, your contract might be terminated before the end of the season.
Employment and Travel Requirements
IMPORTANT
Welcome to the Ekuk Fisheries family for those of you who are just beginning with us and welcome back to our returnees! Things are slightly different this year due to some governmental rules and we will cover them here. You’ve by now had your interview, gotten the job, and you may be wondering what you need to do to make your amazing journey with us easier. Please see the following to gauge whether or not you have the documentation needed to make the travel and employment process with Ekuk Fisheries as seamless as possible. These are not suggestions. These are requirements beyond our control and need to be taken seriously. These are travel documentation requirements and employee verification requirements. Happy reading!
ID requirements
The Real ID Act of 2005 insists that state-issued IDs meet the minimum-security standards now set by the federal government. Due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID enforcement deadline. The new deadline for REAL ID enforcement is May 3, 2023. Beginning on that date, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need either a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID, such as a Passport to fly within the United States.
Employment Requirements
As part of the employment requirements you will need to complete and submit forms that show your eligibility for employment in the United States. That form is the I-9 form. In order to do this you will need to have the following documentation with you:
Either United States issued Driver's License (Unless it is from one the above mentioned states), or Identification Card, or a School I.D. with your photograph, or a Voter's Registration Card, or a U.S. Military Card, or U.S. Military Dependent I.D. If you have one of those items, then the only other thing I will need for you to bring with you is a Social Security Card
Here is a full list of allowed documents. Please make sure you bring something from list A or something from list B and C.
REMEMBER
These requirements for travel and for employment are not something our company can help you get around. These are government requirements. If you do not have the needed documentation because they have expired or have been lost, do yourselves a favor and apply for duplicates. Do this well before June of this year.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
April - May
Our flight coordinator will contact you (important to leave a working phone number at the end of this orientation) and purchase the tickets for you. We start bringing people between June 10th – June 17th and it takes a few days to transport everybody to Ekuk. Your flights are going to be prepaid but in case you miss your flight we will not rebook you. So, please, don’t miss your flight.
Check airline fees and regulations for luggage allowance (bring money for luggage because we do not pay for your luggage fees) and make sure you bring the necessary documentation needed for boarding and completing the hiring process. Don’t pack your Social Security Card or Driver’s License or ID in your checked luggage. Always keep those items with you. Once you get to Dillingham, a small 4-seater plane will pick you up and transport you to Ekuk.

PRE-SEASON
June 10th - June 20th (varies)
Accommodation will be assigned upon arrival (usually 2 people per room, some capacity for couples housing but not guaranteed). The next day is your 3-hour orientation including general production and safety. You are allowed to work after successfully completing your orientation. During pre-season we will not be working with fish, but we will work on various projects to get the plant cleaned up and ready to process.
We will also make pallets (a lot of pallets). The hours are going to be limited during pre-season and job assignments will be posted every night after dinner. Pre-season is also good time to ask about available positions and great for preparing for what is about to come…

FISHING SEASON
June 18th - end of July (varies)
The exact start date is determined by the Department of Fish and Game and it can be as early as June 17th or as late as June 28th. When we get the notice, the department and shift lists will be posted. Everybody will be assigned to the Production Department (Fish House – primary processing, Case Up – packing, Fillet or Roe) and shift (A – 6am to 10pm; B – 2pm to 6am; C – 10pm to 2 pm).
All positional training will be held the first production day. The season gets busy and during the peak you can expect to work multiple 16 hr shifts back to back. The season ends towards the end of July when we will clean the entire plant and depart.
